New Tires and not much else

I finally new tires last night. My car is now over budget by $388 this month. I need to create a car maintenance fund. I figure I need an oil change every 3 months, which should cost about $30 (put $10/month into the car maintenance account). I also need to figure that I will need to cover maintenance cost. I'm estimating about $100/month. I'm going to do my budget to bring in $110/month for car maintenance.

On a bright note, I cut $6/month of unnecessary fees out of my budget. My insurance company charges $3 for each account for billing every month ($3 for car, $3 for rental), so I set-up a direct deposit with my savings account to eliminate the fees. $6/month*12 months/year=$72 per year, which almost covers my rental insurance for the year!

I recently switched to a Charles Schwab investor checking account, 4.25% APY. With a single month of normal banking, I earned about $3 in interest. While I don't think I will become rich by using this account, I may be able to build up a little cushion in my checking account without writing it into my budget. So far, the cusotmer service is fantastic, the checking account has no minimums, free checks, free bill pay, and an ATM fee reimbursement policy (that I haven't used yet).

Where did my money go? August edition

I know that August isn't over, and I will probably spend $200 on tires tonight...but I thought I would put this post together before I go on VACATION for the weekend :)

Rent--$670
Utilities--$60.67 (also includes payment to Comcast, which is a company I plan on avoiding for the rest of my life) Over budget by $30.67
Health Care--$231.31 (I had to buy contacts, fill a few prescriptions, and a few appointments) Over budget by $131.31

Clothing--$61.48 Over budget by $11.48
Misc.--$61.46 (race entry fees, a toaster, and a few nails) under budget by $138.54
Travel--$192.46 Over budget by $92.46

Food--$185.12 (I'm proud because I'm under budget, but I still spend $83.47 eating out) Under budget by $14.88

Car--$580.20 (this includes gas, car payment, car insurance, maintenance...this does not include the tires I'm going to purchase tonight) Over budget by $152.70

Looking at the past month, I'm proud of myself for reducing my spending in certain areas (like food). I also need to have a better game plan for the unexpected costs (like health care and my car maintenance).

Currently Reading...

I'm currently reading Money Can Buy Happiness: How to Spend to Get the Life You Want by MP Dunleavey. I requested the book from the library as soon as I it was mentioned in her column on MSN Money. I have to admit that I'm a little disappointed. While she does offer some sound advice, most of the book has already been covered by other personal finance books. Also, Dunleavey has about one cheesy get-to-know-your-spending exercise per chapter. One of the exercises actually requires you to pour water into priority cups....I might have skipped that exercise. Anyway, when I finish the book, I will write a little bit more about the book.

Meg at The World of Wealth had a great post about always being prepared. A few of her coworkers lost their jobs out of the blue. I realized that this could happen to any one...and I am totally not prepared for this! I wouldn't even be able to afford a single month of rent if I lost my job today...This is a scary prospect.

I am going to come up with a concrete budget, and save at least $100/month to an emergency fund. I also need to set-up a car repair fund...for all the fun auto repairs I've been emptying my emergency fund for.

Saving on Holiday Shopping

With holiday season approaching, I am currently saving $50 per month for gifts. I do most of my Christmas shopping online because I don't like the crowded malls. I save a lot of money every year by using online promo codes for a percentage off, free shipping, or a free gift. Coupon Chief is a great page for finding promo codes. The site is well organized and detailed. If you are doing any online shopping, stop by coupon chief to see if there are any online codes that could save you money.

I've started to brain storm about gifts for my family and friends. For my mother, I will probably buy a nice cardigan set using an Ann Taylor online code. I usually buy books from Amazon for my dad, but this year I think I will buy him an Art of Shaving gift set (sandalwood scent). For my siblings, I usually get them a cute item from The Gap or Banana Republic (with the receipt for return, of course). This year, I'm stumped about what to get my boyfriend. We've been together about a year now...and I guess we're pretty serious. I feel like I should get him something substantial, but I'm not sure what that would be. For my sister's dog, I will get him a little toy from a pet supply store.

My car is back...

My car has been picked up from the dealership. With a bill of about $100, my car is now functioning and is really shiny. Now, I need to get a few new tires (I'm guessing three). Thank you to brip blap, travis robers-skiing at home, sf money musings, melissa, and jonathan for advice on where to purchase my new tires. I have the information on what brand, type and size of tire I need; so I'm going to call around to a few local tire places to find the lowest price.

I'm going away for Labor Day weekend. I feel like this weekend marks the end of summer, which is always sad. However, it made me think about winter transportation to work. I'll ride my bike until it snows...and then I could walk to the bus (a few blocks away from my apartment)with a bus stop a few blocks away from work or I could just walk to work. Neither are extremely appealing in the harsh winter conditions...maybe I'll just call in sick when the windchill is below -20! :)

Budget.....????

The dreaded word...the word that makes me cringe...B-U-D-G-E-T! And no, I haven't stuck to mine...I haven't even set-up the ING accounts to separate my expenses. I have spent the money...but I don't know how or where...

After reading a great post about the Freedom Account on Loonies and Sense, I decided that I need to add another section....car repairs. I don't think I need to add $500 for four months, but I do need to add this column. I think $1000/year would be a good estimate. With a car repair account, I won't need to wipe out my emergency fund every few months with car repairs (or go into credit card debt).

I don't think I can have a Freedom account...too much....Freedom...I need to have my money in separate accounts that are clearly labelled...so I can know exactly how much money I can spend in each area.

The only step I have made in the right direction is switching to an interest checking account with Charles Schwab. I really like my account, and the customer service has been excellent. Plus, I earned $3 in interest since opening the account....not bad!

Car is back at the shop....

I dropped my car off at the dealership today. They're going to look at it and give me a call. I hope they don't take 3 weeks (like the last visit). Since the car is back at the shop, the tires have been put on hold. I think I will take is to Belle Tires and get the same tires that are on the car (Uniroyal, something or other). Thank you to brip blap, travis robers-skiing at home, sf money musings, melissa, and jonathan for advice on where to purchase my new tires.

My favorite frugal posts

No Impact Man posts about making shopping bags out of old t-shirts.

My Two Dollars compares the Civic to the Civic Hybrid

Madame X wrote a post on Palm's new device, Foleo....it's been dubbed the "Fooleo"

My Money Blog has a great post about The Home Flipping Shows. Am I the only one that is obsessed with these shows? Since I don't have cable any more, I can't say that I watch the shows very often. However, I get sucked into watching the flippers work their magic (and for some, their un-magic).

Another small addition...

Another small addition to my down payment account courtesy of PPP, which brings my grand total to $852.38 (2.84% of my $30k goal). I still haven't re-evaluated my budget to allocate some of my primary pay check to this account. This is a big step, and I'm going to start off small. I'm going to try to contribute $25/month and eventually work up (hopefully to around $200).

Thanks for all of the advice for my car...I'm still struggling to figure it out. Jon from Patient Investing thinks my problem is a fuse...but according to the web directions, I should be looking for a fuse labeled IOD...which I don't have....I'm going to try to investigate more tonight.

Bad News!

My car battery died (it was 7 years old), so I replaced it myself for around $95 (new battery and disposal of the old battery). Now, the speedometer and fuel gage don't work! I think I might have blown a fuse (but I really don't know very much about cars). Does anyone else know what might have caused this?

WHY ME?! I think my car hates me.

A weekend post!

I usually don't post on the weekends because I don't have Internet access at my apartment. Well, I still haven't broken down and gotten Internet (still extremely pissed at Comcast). However, I had to stop by work to pick something up, and I thought I would waste a little bit of time by checking out all of my favorite personal finance blogs.

Hm....yesterday I didn't go out to eat (not even for dinner)....I stayed in and made dinner. With a $13 bill at the grocery store, I made dinner, breakfast, and lunch...of course I have left over stuff....like a snickers ice cream bar with my name on it!

My car is back!

My car is back and better than ever! I picked up my car today! I didn't have to pay a deductible, just a small upgrade fee for a new tire! Now, I have to replace all of my other tires, which I needed to do anyway.

I'm looking into tire places. Does anyone have any recommendations? Or tips for tire shopping?

Top 10 Money Drains

Erasing our Debt had a post about a great article on Yahoo! Finance (from Bankrate.com), Top 10 Money Drains.

Let's see how I stack up!

1. Coffee--Don't drink it. I drink tea occasionally at home.

2. Cigarettes--Don't smoke.

3. Alcohol--I've started to limit my cocktails to one beer a night.

4. Bottled Water--I've started carrying around my trusty Nalgene...and I love my Brita!

5. Manicures--While I really want a manicure, I haven't had one in quite a while (about a year).

6. Car washes--My bf washes my car at his place.

7. Weekday lunches out--This IS my vice! I'm trying to overcome it...and I haven't had a lunch out in over 2 weeks!

8. Vending machine snacks--Thank goodness my building doesn't have a vending machine.

9. Interest on credit cards--Thank goodness I paid off my credit cards.

10. Unused memberships--My only memberships are AAA (which I use frequently for discounts and for car towing) and my gym membership. While I don't go to the gym as much as I should, I think it's important that I always have the choice (in case the weather is crappy) to run on a treadmill.

To sum up--3,4, and 7 are trouble...but I'm working on each one...and I wish I had enough money to make 5 a problem!

Small Addition to Down Payment Account

My down payment account has reached $842.33 (2.8% of my $30k goal). The recent addition was partially from my second job. As a reminder, my paychecks from my second job are directly deposited into my down payment savings account, so I never have access to them...and can't spend them! The other part of my deposit is from PayPerPost. I have made a little bit of money from PPP, and I hope to earn even more. It's been a great way (easy and fast) for me to earn a little extra money for my down payment account. If you aren't already a member, you should consider trying it out.

Frugal (and Easy) Recipes from Other Bloggers!

I can't cook, and now I can't afford to eat out...what is a girl to do?! Thanks to the pf blogging community I am going to venture into the wonderful world of cooking!

Meg from The World of Wealth provided this recipe for Stir fry (looks like there will be enough left overs for lunch)

Buy whatever veggies, meat, and/or meat substitutes you like (or are on sale). I usually get bell peppers, an onion, and some chicken or tofu strips. Put olive oil (or Pam) on frying pan, insert veggies/meat, and cook on medium/high or a few minutes or until done. Serve on top of brown rice (one bag is like $1 and has over 12 servings!).

Paid Twice offered this quick recipe

1/2 lb of meat
one package of rice a roni or pasta roni
one can veggies or 1/2 lb frozen veggies
Cook the meat (brown ground beef or turkey or cook chicken breast in oven). Then, make whatever-a-roni according to package directions, but add the meat and veggie to it when you add the water. Some of them, you can top with shredded cheese after cooking. Makes a simple casserole with leftovers, kind of the same principle as *helper.

Melissa from Common Cents really came through! Thanks for all of the great recipes!
Goulash
Cook whatever pasta you have (I prefer a variety in it although it doesn't matter what you use)Throw in cooked ground beef, a can of stewed tomatoes, a can of tomato sauce (mixed with some water to thin it), and sugar to taste to sweeten it.

Egg in the hole
Cut a hole in a piece of bread with a glass, butter both sides of the bread and crack an egg in the center. Fry and pepper it to taste.

Tater Tot Pie
1 lb. ground chuck
1 med. onion, chopped fine
1 lg. pkg. tater tots, partially thawed
1 can cream of celery soup
1/2 c. milk
Add chopped onions to ground chuck and saute until red is gone. Do not overcook. Line bottom of 8 x 8 inch pan with meat mixture, salt and pepper to taste. Do not pack the meat mixture. Cover meat mixture with broken tater tots. Mix soup with 1/2 cup milk and pour over tater tots. Bake in 400 degree oven for 30 to 40 minutes. If you like cheese, add 1 cup grated cheese the last 5 minutes of baking.

SF Money Musings had quite a few quick (and easy) ideas.

breakfast burritos--make scrambled eggs, add some salsa, and some diced bell peppers and that's it. instead of eggs, you could do a sausage breakfast burrito if you have that. I'd suggest turkey sausage ... much leaner.

fried rice with Hillshire farms link sausages or smoked sausages. Once you cut the sausage into little pieces, fry them and season with frozen veggies and make a bit pot of rice and that's it.

walnut/raspberry salads with olive oil. You can add some garbanzo beans, turkey bacon or chicken breast for a delicious salad

tuna salad sandwiches or without the bread. Open a can of tuna, season with mayo/Dijon mustard, salt/pepper and some lemon juice, mix and you have a very filling dinner.

NtBeachnc has a few great recipes on her page!

Jim Cramer isn't beating the market

When I saw that headline on MSN money, I had to click. The article, Jim Cramer's Bad Bets, discusses how Cramer's (a TV host on CNBC that tells viewers he can "help them make big money") stock picks haven't beaten the market.

Over the past two years, viewers holding Cramer's stocks would be up 12% while the Dow rose 22% and the Standard & Poor's 500 Index ($INX) gained 16%, according to a record of 1,300 of the CNBC star's "buy" recommendations compiled by YourMoneyWatch, a Web site run by a retired stock analyst and loyal Cramer-watcher.

This just shows how you should educate yourself. You can't depend on a stock guru on TV. Make your own educated decisions about your finances. I never liked this guy...and I do have to admit that I get a little bit of joy knowing that he's pretty full of it! :)

$10 from mysurvey.com

I signed up for mysurvey.com about a month ago. I've filled out a few surveys, which usually take a few minutes. I've finally acquired 1,00o points! At mysurvey.com, 1,000 points=$10. I just requested my first $10 check. I will add this money to my down payment accounts when I receive it.

As for the other sites I use,

PineCone hasn't sent me a survey in a few weeks.

SurveyTeam, Tiktikcash, and Panda Research require $100 to cash out. Since I don't have Internet access at home, I haven't been able to give much time to these sites. I've earned at least $10 on each site, so I don't want to abandon the small amount of work I have put in. However, if I don't get Internet access, I will never be able to reach the $100 cash out mark.

I have $2.50 sitting in my Brandport Insights account (requires $5 to cash out).

Grocery Shopping

Last night I went grocery shopping to stock up on food (since I have been neglecting my kitchen for so long)...I bought everything I could think of (even salsa and chips)....and the total....$32! I had 4 full bags and a lot of toilet paper. How does this happen? I didn't bring any coupons with me because I hadn't made a list. I just bought what was on sale or the store brand. Instead of Charmin Ultra, I bought Cottenelle Ultra because the 24 pack was 50% off. I will admit that I was also shocked that my bill was under $50. I should be good for another few weeks....

I recently wrote a post about avoiding restaurants. While I love food, I realized that I just need to learn how to cook. I'm in a rough period...no skills...no easy recipes. I know a lot of other pf bloggers have posted frugal (and I hope, easy) recipes. Instead of sorting through every one's blogs, would any of my readers mind posting their favorite recipes as a comment? I will write a post (which will eventually be printed off and taped to my refrigerator) about frugal recipes and provide a link back to the recipe maker's page. Save a girl from eating chips, salsa, and scrambled eggs!

Things I Do to Save Money

Motivated by CalGirlFinance, I thought I would put together a list of things that I do to save money.

1. Ride my bike to work (or any other location in riding distance). Saves on gas, parking, and wear on my car.

2. Pack my lunch--This is a relatively new thing, but I had a turkey sandwich today.

3. Bring a water bottle--Prevents me from needing to purchase bottled water

4. Use the public library--renting DVDs, checking out books, and using the Internet has saved me hundreds of dollars.

5. Conserve electricity (only utility bill I pay)--I turn off the lights when I'm not in the room, used the air conditioning unit 3 times this summer, and keep unused appliances unplugged.

6. Get my hair cut at an Aveda school. Great products, no tip, cheap price!

7. No Internet or land line at my apartment--Not having in the Internet it hard, but it saves me about $40 per month ($480/year)

8. I love coupons! I use online coupon codes (check the forums at FatWallet and Slickdeals), store coupons, and coupons for grocery items.

9. Free Samples. I've been using free samples of shampoo and conditioner for about a month now. I have almost used my stash, then I'll use a coupon to purchase shampoo from the grocery store.

10. Free money--I have opened up an ING and a CitiBank account for the free money bonus ($25 and $50, respectively).

11. AAA membership! I flash this card everywhere! I saved 10% on my hotel reservation this weekend...had my car towed for free a few weeks ago. I always ask if there is a AAA discount (it never hurts to ask).

12. Combining insurance--I have my renter's and car insurance through the same company...and I save on it because I'm a member of a credit union.

One piece of advice....

I was tagged by Krystal to continue Moolanomy's My One Money Advice (MOMA) Meme. Moolanomy is trying to promote financial responsibility and awareness in our hyper consumption society.

The question: If you can give one advice, tip, or story related to money, what would you share?

Avoid Restaurants!

Eating out is one of the easiest ways to waste your money. Spend $1 on a loaf of bread, $5 on a pound of turkey, and $1 for lettuce and avoid spending $4 for a six inch sub at subway. As I have documented on my blog, I'm struggling to save money for retirement, for a down payment, and for my future. My biggest expenditure before I started tracking my spending with this blog was eating out. I would go out to lunch every day and spend $5-$10. I would go out to dinner with my boyfriend for special occasions and spend $40-$60 on a meal. Now, my boyfriend and I spend time on the weekends cooking dinner together. It's really fun and surprisingly inexpensive. Even if we decide to splurge on ridiculous ingredients, the grocery bill does not come close to the cost of a restaurant. Plus, we have tons of leftovers.

As a non-financial side note, eating out is also bad for your health. People tend to eat more at a restaurant because they place HUGE portions in front of you. Also, the constant refills you get...do you know how calories you've consumed from drinks alone? Also, with all of the troubling information about trans fats, do you know what type of oil or fat products (butter, margarine, or shortening) the restaurant uses? Why not cook at home and use a nice olive oil (Trader Joe's has a great selection)?

I would like to tag--Stealthy and Dimples. I'm looking forward to both posts....

Addition to Down Payment account...

As you may have noticed, I have become a member of PayPerPost. I received my first payment today, and I deposited it into my down payment account. PPP is a great way to make money with your blog.

My down payment account now as $790.84 (2.6%) of my goal. I'm trying to stick to my budget, and I'm doing a pretty good job. My only weakness is my food budget because I'm dying to eat out for lunch. I'm doing a better job bringing my lunch to work and eating dinner at home. However, I did eat a Chipotle burrito last night....yum!

No Car...No Shopping....

Since my car is still in the shop, I have been forced to travel by bike or on foot. Luckily, I live very close to work (only a 10 minute bike ride). However, I do not live very close to other things...like my drugstore....the grocery store (there is no way I could get milk, eggs, or anything frozen)....the mall (or any shopping areas).

This weekend I have to go to a wedding, and I don't have a new dress to wear :( I budgeted for this new dress, but I haven't been able to purchase it. I thought I would be able to shop this week, but my car is still not fixed (maybe next week according to the dealership). Unfortunately, I leave for the wedding today (I'm getting a ride with some friends)...so no dress! I will just have to wear the dress I wore to the last wedding (in July with all of the same people).

I'm being frugal, but NOT by choice!

I love interest!!!!!

For the month of July, my down payment accounts earned $1.92 in interest! I know everyone is rolling their eyes and thinking I have that amount between my couch cushions....but I love free money! :) I try to take advantage of every free money opportunity that is presented....for example, for signing up for my CitiBank account I earned a $50 bonus...for signing up with ING (through a referral from Dimple's) I earned $25....I referred a reader to ING and I earned an additional $10 (they earned $25)...

Does anyone else have any other ways to get free money?

The Dangers of Credit Cards....

I have run into problems with credit cards in the past. Recently, I ran up about $1,000 in credit card debt in the span of a few months. In the past, I have not read the credit card fine print and have been charged for late fees, balance transfer fees, and increasing interest rates. A single late fee (on my card) was $39. The credit card company can move your payment date up if they see fit. I had an automatic payment scheduled for the 15th of the month, but the due date for the month was on the 14th (it was normally the 17th).

If you are in serious debt, you should consider credit counseling. A knowledgeable professional will be able to outline the terms of each credit card and come up with a plan for paying off your debts. Whether you pay off the smallest debts first (for the snowball Dave Ramsey tactic) or start attacking the bills with the highest interest (to minimize money paid for interest), it helps to have a professional help.

I'm currently trying to limit the use of my credit cards. I plan on using a debit card linked to an account with my fun and food money. I will use a credit card for gas (budget of $100/month) and for clothing purchases ($50/month, but I think I will let it grow for a little bit in a savings account so I can buy a coat). I read a post (I can't remember which blog, leave me a comment if you remember which blog) about how they had a little note on each credit card with the amount on the card. I think I'm going to put a post-it on the outside of my gas card with the amount I have charged that month.

Making money online...

A few other bloggers have joined PineCone (Dreamy and NIUIceprincess), which is my favorite money site. However, I have tried out a few other sites. Panda Research is set-up well. You earn $5 when you first register, but you can only cash out when you have $100. Therefore, I've pretty much abandoned Panda Research. The same is true for survey team. You receive $3 when you sign-up with survey team, but you can only cash out when you earn $100. If I ever get Internet access at home, I will consider pursuing these sites more, but I don't have the time right now.

Right now, I'm using PineCone and MySurvey.com. Both have short surveys to fill out every once in a while (and PineCone e-mails you when you have a survey) and you can cash out at much lower amounts. PineCone pays you a few days after you complete a survey. MySurvey.com allows you to cash out at $10 (1,000 points). I haven't received a payment from Mysurvey.com yet, but I'm only 50 points away! :)

Does anyone have any new sites?

The Best Places to Live

CNNMoney created a list of the Best Places to Live (2007)

They break down each town into categories--Financial, Housing, Education, Quality of Life, Leisure and Culture, Weather, Health, and Meet the Neighbors. While I find this list ridiculous...I can't help but look for my city....is it on the list? Nope....maybe next year....

Do you buy bottled water?

I just have a Brita filter system and a nalgene bottle. However, I do occasionally buy a bottle of water....I usually purchase a purified water like Aquafina or Dasani. I noticed this article on MSN, "Aquafina labels to tell water’s source — the tap." I wonder if this actually shocked people...The Aquafina website has a "how we purify" section, which clearly states they use water from public water sources....This isn't a sponsored post. I'm just wondering where people thought purified water products came from....

I thought I would try to increase my Technorati numbers...we'll see if this works...

I just stumbled upon this opportunity to increase my blogs technorati rankings. It is reported from several other blogers that it works very well. If you want to try it on our own blog just copy the text below and follow the instructions.

Just to make me smile...

There are so many things that I love about this video...It just makes me smile. I love the song (I need to get this for my iPod)...Also, I love the big girls in teh leotards....with glitter.

Small Raise

On a recent post, dong commented, "i think alot of times to meet your savings goals, it's really about increasing your income and not just your savings...The 2nd job is good, but how are the opportunities for your primary occupation?"

I responded that I wouldn't receive a raise for a while since I had recently received a large raise (15%). Well...yesterday, I was informed that I would receive a small raise (2.5%). While I don't think this is going to help me come up with an additional $200/month, it does make me feel appreciated. Also, every little bit helps!

Food....and stuff....

My food budget this month is mainly being used to pay for my fun last month (by paying off the credit cards). I put my food money and my fun money in an easily accessible account. It's a good way to make me prioritize eating out (do I want to go out to eat or see a movie), but right now...it's making me eat peanut butter and jelly sandwiches! I'm sure I won't starve to death, but I can't wait until I can spend more than $20 at the grocery store. I hope this month will make me really think twice before charging anything to my credit card.

Favorite Posts

I thought I would point out a few of my favorite posts. If you haven't read them, I would recommend it...it's a great way to waste time!

NIUIceprincess has a great post about Blades of Glory. Saw it! Loved it!

Krystal also wants a coat, but she's having spending issues. The Kenneth Cole coat is my favorite.

I'm really impressed with Dimple's struggles with her Emotional Shopper Syndrome. Her steps have helped me (no more credit cards) with my shopping addiction too....She's making great progress and has been really proactive (in a non-Jessica Simpson way).

I've Paid for this twice already...has a great post about the importance of an emergency fund.

If I weren't on a budget...

...I would definitely purchase this jacket from J.Crew. It's the new Bella Jacket (Wool Herringbone)....and it's absolutely amazing! It's so versatile...and would look fantastic with jeans. At $198, it would take me 4 months of not buying clothes to be able to afford this fall jacket...I really need to save up for a winter jacket...which will probably be around that price....but much more practical.

Buying a Home

I recently posted about my long-term financial goals. I would like to buy a home in about 5 years. Using the MSN Savings Calculator, I realized that I need to save $5,357 per year in order to reach my goal of $30,000 in 5 years. This is roughly $445 per month. I've been saving less than $200/month. I need to get my stuff together and really start saving. I'm going to try to start working more at my second job, and I will have to budget properly to find money in my primary paycheck.

Since I am struggling to make this budget happen, I'm going to try to wait a few month (until I get used to the changes and pay off the remnants of my credit card balances), and then try to tighten down a little bit more.

Discounts in your Wallet

Liz Pulliam Weston pulled together a pretty nice article entitled, Discounts Hiding in Your Wallet. She discusses discounts from membership clubs we already belong to. While most MSN articles are regurgitated information that we've all heard, I learned a few things from this article.

AAA is the only club mentioned in the article that I am a member.
10% off Circuit City purchases over $199
6% off Dell computers
10% off at Target.com This is huge for me!
10% off at Payless Shoes (just show your card at the store for 10% off regularly priced merchandise)

NRA--I just found this list too good amusing.
discounts on laser vision correction (maybe I should become a member)
log cabins
Holiday Cards

Free Cereal!

Since I'm really struggling to cut down my food budget, I am looking forward to receiving my Chocolate Chex in the mail.

Go to Wal-Mart to receive a free sample of the new Chocolate Chex cereal.

Sweat and Save

I've decided to boycott air conditioning. While the rest of the people I know have their air cranked up, I am sitting in front of my fan and sweating. I have had a few nights with restless sleep, but for the most part I'm okay. If I get too hot, I can go for a swim at the pool....or go to my gym, which has the air conditioning turned up as high as it can go....Plus, my office is so cold that I have to wear sweaters around.

Am I being frugal? Or just plain crazy? What do you do to save money on utility bills?

Money Troubles...

I'm having a very hard time sticking to my budget. I have only $8.64 Friday. How did happen?! Well, I had to pay off a credit card ($183.26). I chose to do it with my fun money, so I knew I was going to be BROKE for a few weeks. I don't like not being able to go to the grocery store. I'm being forced to eat down my food storage (like SF Money Musings did to save money). Unfortunately, I don't have anything that can be made into a meal. I will be eating canned soup and green beans for the next few days.

However, the problem will not end on Friday. I have to pay another $155.27 by September 5th (in order to avoid any finance charges). About $30 is gas (so this is covered by one of my other categories), but the rest of the money is food and fun....so I have another $125 that needs to come out of my fun money account.

I have a weekend trip planned which I was planning on using some of my fun money account. I will have to be frugal and plan dinner beach picnics instead of restaurants. I'm going to plan out our meals and try to pack food to avoid going out to eat. However, the hotel bill will not be small...oh how I hate budgets!

Link Love

I need to update my blogroll. If you're interested in a link exchange, please comment on this post. If I see that you've added my blog to your blog, then I'll add your blog to my list.

Right now, my blogroll consists mainly of personal finance blogs, but I'm open to all types of blogs. I check out all of the blogs on my blogroll almost every week day. I usually comment at least once a week, and I'm good for a link once in a while. If you're interested, just leave a comment.

Any questions?

Financial Goals

My personal financial goals

Buy a home (probably a one or two bedroom condo). With my income, I would be unable to afford to pay a mortgage plus PMI, so I need to have at least a 20% down payment. Currently, I'm working toward saving $30,000. I would like to purchase a condo around $100,000, so I guess in a few years it would be around $150,000.

Build a 6 month emergency fund. My current emergency fund has $5 in it. I really need to rebuild this account and make saving a priority.

$100,000 in my retirement accounts. I just got them over the $10k goal, so I guess $100k is the next step.

STAY OUT OF CREDIT CARD DEBT! This will require sticking to my budget and passing on the unnecessary extras (like Cable and Internet...and eating out).

CashDuck Out

Both Dimples and NIU Ice Princess have written posts about CashDuck closing. While I have mentioned that I really like PineCone Research, I have been trying out a few new sites. I have made $10 from Panda Research, but you have to acquire $100 to cash out (kind of like Adsense). I am also evaluating Survey Team, but I haven't been too impressed. My recent find is mysurvey.com. I currently have 800 points (from taking very short surveys) and you need 1000 to receive $10. While I will not become rich while using this site, I think I might commit a little bit of energy to using this site and trying to make some money from it.

And last but certainly not least is Brandport Insights. I just filled out a survey that took about 5 minutes and received $2.50 in compensation. This site requires that you make up to $5, but it deposits the cash into your paypal account. It's super convenient, and I've been a member for years with no noticeable spam.

I hate Comcast!

As I mentioned before, I cancelled my Internet access at home. Since I have missed having the service, I thought I would look into getting Internet access at my new place. UNTIL....I received a bill (forwarded from my old address) for $150! They've been billing me after I cancelled my service AND turned in my modem. So...I called Comast and asked them what was going on....they were like...uh...and then they claimed that I only owed them $40...WHAT?! When I talked to them in July, they said I was squared away. Anyway, I paid the $40 just to be rid of them (otherwise they would put a mark on my credit report). Now, I'm SO angry! I had to pay for a service I never received.

In my frustration, I wrote a letter to Comcast corporation letting them know what horrible customer service I received. Unfortunately, since I don't have a phone line, my Internet options are extremely limited. Anyone have any advice?

Price Matching

As I mentioned, I am a huge fan of Fatwallet. I love their forums and their cash back policy. Today, I had to order contact lens. I went to Fatwallet and noticed that they had a cash back (8%) for the online retailer that I have ordered from in the past. I placed my order, but then I noticed they had a 105% lowest price guarantee. I took this as a challenge. I asked one of my co-workers where she orders her contacts (she spends a lot of time shopping around for the lowest price), and she listed off a few different retailers. One of the retailers was $2 lower per box. Since I had already placed my order, I decided to take the company up on their lowest price guarantee. I sent an e-mail to their customer service department. I will keep you guys posted on my first adventure in comparison shopping. Right now, I'm feeling pretty proud of myself.

I love ING!

I just earned $10 for referring Jon from Patient Investing to ING (he earned $25). I hope he likes his ING account as much as I like mine.

If you haven't checked out Patient Investing, I would recommend reading his post on Evaluating Stocks to Buy. He does a great job of breaking down (for investment newbies like me) stock purchases by term length and needs.

Addition to my Down Payment Accounts

I had a decent increase in my down payment account today. I had a paycheck from my second job deposited, and I made another $5 with PineCone research. The balances from both my Electric Orange from ING DIRECT and my Ultimate CitiBank Account total $769.34 or 2.56% of my $30,000 goal.

I haven't made any money from Panda Research or Survey Team. I have been relatively busy, so I haven't had time to play online. Also, since I do not have Internet access at home, I don't have as much time to spend on the Internet.

Stop carrying credit cards!

After reading Dimple's post about controlling her ESS by not carrying her credit cards, I have decided to stop carrying my credit cards. I'm going to have to find a secure place to store them. I will keep my debit card (for my fun money account) in my wallet. I will also place a card for gas in my car.

I'm still deciding what to do with the rest of my credit cards. I'm tempted to cut some of them up, but I'm not sure I'm ready for that step. I want to keep my extremely old card because it has such a high limit. I'm not sure why I would need to charge $10k to a credit card, but it makes me nervous to think about cutting it up. I haven't used that card for years, and I only keep it because it helps my credit score. I may keep these cards in a box in my apartment for now. When I build up a bigger emergency fund, I will cut up the cards....until then....I'm just not ready for that big step. I guess I see my credit cards as a type of security blanket.

Car update

I spoke with my insurance company about my car. They said that since it wasn't my fault that I wouldn't have to pay my deductible. I'll wait until the billing is complete to do a dance, but I feel a sense of relief.

Small addition

I had a few dollars sitting in my Fatwallet account, so I transferred it over to my CitiBank account. I also had a $10 bonus from a referral to ING (if any of my readers would like a $25 referral bonus, please feel free to e-mail me) and a little interest. This brings my total to around $639.61 or 2.1% of my final down payment goal.

FRUSTRATION!!!!!!!

Last night, I had a little car problem, which is going to be a very expensive car problem. I just wiped out my emergency fund, so this is probably going to be stuck back on my credit card. I'm not sure how much it will cost or if my insurance will cover it.

UGH!!!!!!!!

August off to a bumpy start...

So...August 1st...I'm trying to cut down on my food budget, and what do I do? I go out and blow $15 on a dinner out with a friend. Not a good way to start out the month. On the bright side, we did walk there, I had a blast, and I have leftovers for dinner tonight.

Mean Comments

This is totally off the topic of personal finance, but I was wondering how other bloggers (or even blog readers) feel.

I always love reading the Millionaire in the Making stories on CNN Money. I recently discovered that you are able to leave comments for these articles. I am always shocked at how critical the readers are. While I was a little shocked that the most recent Millionaires in the Making, the Magtibays, had $11k in credit card debt, I was just appalled at how rude the comments were.

I was reading one of my favorite blogs, Well-heeled: California Dreamin', and I was extremely upset about one of the comments left by an anonymous reader.

Wow, need to make the parents pay for your little bills huh? How sad! They pay for your school and now your bills? Sounds like you’re a spoiled child, based on this and your shoe obsession…

This reminds me of all of Casey Serin's haterz (which coincidentally made him semi-famous or infamous). Why do some people feel the need to leave hurtful and mean comments? I have avoided any mean comments (probably because hardly anyone reads my blog), but I am disgusted at how some people treat others. My mom would be proud, but I always try to follow the golden rule (do on to others, as you wish they would do unto you). Therefore, I try to keep my comments upbeat and positive. I also think positive and helpful comments add to the good feeling of the blog community.

What do you think about mean comments? Do you leave them? Do you receive them? If you receive them, do they hurt your feelings?

Where did all my money go? July edition

Rent $765
This will be going down to $670 with my new apartment. I'm looking forward to the lower rent payments.

Clothing $137.59
I bought a dress for a wedding I attended and a pair of pants for work. I have another wedding in August, but I'm considering wearing one of my older dresses.

Apartment Stuff $75.08
This includes paint, locks, keys, and moving expenses.

Food $183.87
I had 4 meals out totalling $43.35. I spent $140.52 on groceries. I would like to get this down to about $150/month on food, but I'm easing my way down.

Gym $27

Car Insurance $104.50
Car Payment $223
Gas $41.22 (much lower than the $100 that I had budgeted)

Utilities $32.07
This will go down because my new apartment includes gas and water. I will only be paying for electric. I also cancelled my cable and Internet :( to save money. I miss them, but I'm trying to make up for it with DVDs and books from the local library.

Presents $38.88

I didn't include taxes, health insurance, life insurance, retirement contributions, and credit card payments. I did a pretty decent job of sticking to my budget, so I was able to pay off my credit cards.

NetWorth

My networth increased a little bit over the month--only because of my retirement contributions.
