Moving 1,500 miles
While I really like my mattress, I don't think I can afford the rental truck ($60+$.80/mile) and the gas for the rental truck and my car. I think I will be able to use my bike rack to transport my two bikes and load my car down with clothing, kitchen stuff, and decorations.
My youngest sister is moving into her first apartment in the fall, so she is in need of furniture. One of my other siblings is claiming quite a few other pieces of my furniture. I could probably make a few hundred dollars selling my furniture, but I would rather give it to my siblings to help them out (they're still students and broke).
Does any one have any advice for moving? My last move was less than 3 miles down the street. I'm extremely stressed out about finding an apartment, moving my stuff, and being able to purchase new furniture.

some apartment complexes with throw in a "bonus" if you sign with them = maybe you could get them to comp the van expense.

If you decide you want to hold on to your furniture there are services like door to door that drop a huge box that you pack. They move them to your new place and you unpack.
If there is an Amtrack station at your destination you might be able ship things with them. That's how I got most of my stuff across the county.
Congratz on choosing a school!
Get as many friends and family to help you move as possible. My family and I recently moved into a new home and didn't have any help from family or friends. With two young children, it was extremely difficult. I think you are on the right track with buying new stuff when you get to your new destination given the price of gas. Good luck on your move!!!
Wow, how exciting! Moving is always neat - you get to try a different place, learn different roads, find new restaurants and meet new people. Neat but SO expensive. No advice from me (I spent $1200 on movers last year!) but best of luck!
Sell your books/CDs/DVDs, or if you must move them, ship them media mail. It's surprisingly cheap for such heavy boxes.
anon, The van rental will be about $1300 plus gas. I don't think an apartment complex will comp that. Too far of a move! :(
sara l, I'll have to look into it, but I have a feeling it will be WAY too expensive for me.
passivefamilyincome, I have a lot of family around (I moved my entire apartment last summer in under 3 hours, pack & unpack) here. However, when I get to my new destination, I won't know any one!
stephanie, I'm excited about the move (and the climate change). I don't think I will be able to afford movers (even Budget rental truck will cost more than $1200, not including gas).
dogatemyfinances, Good call! I'll have to start listing them soon. I should start a little moving fund with the money I make from selling my stuff.
I agree with the use of friends and family. I have moved twice in the last two years and it is amazing what friends will do for some pizza!!!
My moves were only about 250 miles away and the gas and truck were killer to me then. If you are only holding on to stuff for sentimental reasons then it is going to cost you.
I slept on an air bed for six months the first time I moved because I got rid of my bed. It was surprisingly comfortable so you might want to consider selling your bed and getting a good quality airbed.
For such a big move I would consider getting rid of some of the larger stuff and then getting more when you reach the new place. I have some great furniture that was donated to me that I keep saying I don't want to get rid of but if I have to move 1500 miles away then I am having the mother of all garage sales and I will get some cheap furniture from WalMart once I get my new digs.
All the best on the move!!!
Moving is stressful for me.
lulugal111, I will definitely use the family-friend connections to load up the stuff to take to my siblings' apartments. When I get to the south, I'm on my own. Luckily, I won't have very much stuff...nothing too large. I don't know if I can survive on an air mattress...that might be a little too hard core for me! :)
Can your car tow a little trailer so you can keep your bed? UHaul rents them but I have no idea how much that would cost.
Having moved all over the country, 8 states in 15 years, I can understand your $$$ situation. You are really right about having to get rid of everything and haul what you need in your car over such a long distance. You can always replace furniture but certain things you need, like your financial, clothes, can be easily compacted and stuffed in your car.
I will be moving in a few months myself, about 800 miles so we will have to share our stories with our readers.
