What I need...and want...
...moving to a new place is scary. I'm keeping calm by making a ton of lists (yes, they're in my moleskine). This list is what I need to find or purchase to make a smooth transition into a Southern Belle.
A new computer. My 7 year old laptop isn't going to cut it. I am guessing that I'm going to need to use my computer for a little bit more than playing minesweeper and checking my e-mail.
I want a laptop. I want to be a pompous graduate student sipping Starbucks while surfing the net and pretending to study.

A couch. I think it will be easier to have one large couch than having several chairs.
I want a Pottery Barn-esque couch that is extremely comfortable.

An apartment. After a rought budget analysis. I need the rent and utilities to be less than $600/month.
I want a one bedroom apartment, with a washer and dryer, a lot of sunlight, and within walking distance of campus.
A bed. LuLuGal from How I Save Money recommended using an air mattress. I'm not sure that I'm tough enough for an air mattress. I think I will purchase the mattress and boxspring, but delay the purchase of a bed frame.
I want a pillowtop mattress with a nice bedframe. Gorgeous linens would be great too!

Any advice about how I can get all of my wants without spending a lot of money? Free would be even better!

Do you really really need a new couch? Couldn't you get by for a while with a cheapo used couch?
Do you need a box spring? I've never used one...
Anyway, just some thoughts I had about your purchases. I just moved myself (although not as far as you're going), so I know what you're going through. Definitely stressful!
you can also get a cheap platform from an ikea-type place (or craigslist) and just get the mattress (no boxspring).
i bought (and sold) nice furniture online too - same quality, much more affordable!
if you are going to splurge on anything, go for the laptop and the location of the apt (and by location, i mean not just close to school, but also close to other things, like laundry, in case you have no washer/dryer!).
I agree with paradigmshifted and check out places like ikea. They have nice looking stuff for a reasonable price.
krystal, I probably will get a used couch. I want a new one, but I don't think I can afford it.
krystal & paradigmshifted, I've also used a box spring...so it makes me a little uneasy to go without :)
Have you tried joining the FreeCycle lists in the new area? Perhaps you'll get lucky! :)
Ikea "Display" Section, Ask your friends/family, Craig's List..that's all I can think of that's legal
The others are: break into a home and steal, but you want the BIG items girl.. no way can you carry that on yo back! :P
You don't need a bed. I bought a mattress and a box spring and got a bed frame for 75 dollars instead of buying a bed. So that's a possible solution for the bed issue.
ms. miniducky, I'll check out freecycle after I move down there.
fabulously broke, Ikea is a great resource.
anonymous, Maybe I'll put off buying a bed frame...
