March Net Worth

With my investments steadily losing money, I'm very happy to report that my net worth increased by 10.13% in March.

I have quite a bit more cash (in checking and savings accounts), $2,166, which is the reason for the increase. My only non-retirement fund lost money (down 7.16%). Even though I contributed over $700, my retirement funds only increased 1.97% ($308).

I'm really proud of my saving this month. I will admit that the boost can be attributed to extra income from my second job and a FSA reimbursement.

March Goals

How did I do with my March goals?

  • $400 into my down payment account. DONE! I deposited a total of $402.24! I deposited $12 into my down payment account from PPP bringing my down payment account to a grad total of $2,271.17, which is 7.57% of my $30,000 goal.
  • $200 into my emergency fund. DONE! I added $225.52 to my emergency fund.
  • Pamper myself. DONE! My new hair cut is fantastic ($16, instead of $15). I did a lot of DIY pampering this month. It was a lot of fun, so I think I'm going to keep it up. I need to buy a new shade of nail polish for my toes. I'm bored with all of my colors!
  • Weight=130. Nope! I'm still at 134. I have to admit that I haven't been working out very much, and my eating habits have been atrocious. I really hope that my grandmother's heart attack will kick me out of my haze and start taking care of my body (it's the only one I have).

Three out of Four is pretty good! I also need to start coming up with my April goals. I have a feeling the goals are going to look a lot like the March goals.

:(

My weekend with my boyfriend was cut short because my grandmother had a heart attack this morning. She's out of surgery, and I will visit her tonight in the hospital. I left my boyfriend's place much earlier than expected, but I know he understand. Plus, I'm visiting him next weekend.

My mother said my grandmother was talking and fine before and after the surgery. However, the doctor gave her a 50/50 chance after placing 4 stints because there was a significant amount of damage to the heart. Right now, I'm feeling a little unsure of what to do.

I have a few books that I was planning on giving my grandmother (they were sitting in a plastic bag next to my door), so I'll bring the books tonight. I guess she'll have a lot of time to read in the hospital.

I will have my March updates (net worth, budget, etc) tomorrow.

Vacation Day

I scheduled a vacation day for today because I needed a break. I've been working more hours than usual at my full time job because I had to correct a mistake made my a coworker (long story) and I've been working more shifts at my part time position (which is really helping out my down payment fund).

This weekend I have to drive to visit my boyfriend, so I appreciate the break this vacation day is providing. I just finished a delightful breakfast of Kashi Go-Lean waffles (still trying to lose weight) and fruit topping. I made the fruit topping by tossing a cup of frozen fruit in the microwave for 2 minutes. Today, I used strawberries and raspberries. The fruit comes out warm and juicy (yum), and it a lot healthier than syrup (and tastes a lot better too).

I recently subscribed to Blockbuster Access and I'm addicted! I will use funds from my Fun budget to cover the $19.99 monthly charge. So far, I've watched Season 2 of Big Love, an HBO drama about a polygamist family; Enchanted; and Atonement. I plan on bringing a DVD to my boyfriend's place so we can get a free rental at Blockbuster. I think I'll get rid of service in the summer. Last night we had 4 inches of snow....so I loved being able to go to my mailbox and get a movie.

Cash Money!

I had a reader poll about what to do with the last $10 check that I received from MySurvey and the results are in. The winner is Hookers & Beer with 25.9% of the vote. Followed closely by emergency fund at 22.2%. Tied with 18.5% of the vote are my travel fund and car fund. And last is my down payment account with 14.8% of the vote.

Thank you to all of my readers that voted! I'm considering opening a Hookers & Beer sub account with ING. Until I open the account, I'm going to put the $10 in my Emergency fund because it could really use the help!

In down payment news, I just received $10 through PPP, which I deposited into my down payment account. The grand total in my down payment fund is $2,259.17. The account has increased by $390.24 during the month of March, but I'm still $9.76 short of my March goal of adding $400. I don't think I'll be able to come up with the money since I'm not having very much luck with any new survey sites.

$10 and disappointment

I just filled out a survey for MySurvey, which gave me enough points to redeem for a $10 check! The checks take about a month to arrive, but I don't feel like my personal information is going all over the web (like with other sites).

Since I didn't like any of the survey sites I tried yesterday, I thought I would post a few new ones that I'm trying out today.

Ipsos

I was rejected! The site claimed it had enough people in my category :(

Survey Network

This is for a gas card too. Can you tell that the gas prices in my area ($3.39 this morning) are killing me?
I filled out the sweepstakes form, but not really a survey site.
WinningSurveys

Yet another gas card offer. I filled out the sweepstakes form, but it's not really a survey site.

UPDATE--New Survey Sites

I've had a lot of luck with a few survey sites, but I'm trying out a few more. I'll post my experiences in a few weeks. **UPDATE**I didn't like any of these new survey sites. My experiences are in bold.

Need to complete offers in oder to get a prize...Not really a survey site.
Survey4Cash
Not really a survey site either

ECN Network--free movie tickets
Tries to get you to sign up for offers, no surveys that I could find.

Rewards Gateway--Get a $500 Gas gift card

This site I might come back and work on. I might have to spend a little money on some of the "offers," but I think it would be worth it for a $500 gas card!

What? You're trying to save money! What's wrong with you?

In the month of March, my down payment accounts have increased by $380.24. This includes $3.63 in interest. Unfortunately, I don't think I will make my goal of contributing $400 to my down payment account because I don't paid at my part time job until April 1st! I'll be short by $19.76.

My down payment account has $2,249.17, which is 7.5% of my $30,000 goal. I also have the goal of $4,000 in my down payment fund by the end of 2008. My down payment accounts have grown by $750.69 in 2008. I'm 30% of the way to my 2008 year end goal.

I love method products!

I clean my desk at work at least once a week. Instead of a more frugal method of rag and cleaner, I use method pink grapefruit wipes. I clean my desk a lot more regularly with these wipes than I would with a more frugal method. I even keep the container on my desk to remind me to wipe down my desk, phone, computer, and stapler (people touch my stuff).

Do you think this is ridiculous? It might be....but I'm not sure I'm willing to give up my method wipes for the more frugal method.

UPDATE--I received this container as a gift, but I must admit that I've paid full price for them in the past (OHMYGOODNESS)!

My Hair Downgrades...

I just read Well-Heeled's post on her hair, and I thought I would create a similar post. One of the first areas that I cut back was my hair. I went from blond (the most expensive) to a chocolate brown (gorgeous, but still expensive) to my natural hair color. I also went from going to an expensive salon to an Aveda school. My hair cut at the school takes about an hour, but I used to spend 2-3 hours getting high lights, color, and a cut.

The Evolution of my Hair
Blond with Highlights (from ages 20-24)
  • Highlights every 8 weeks, about $100 with tip=$650/year
  • Root touch-up every 4 weeks, $60=$780/year
  • Hair cut-every 8 weeks, $30=$195/year
  • Shampoo & Conditioner, about $30/set=$360/year
  • Styling products, conditioning masks, about =$240/year

Total cost for the beach blond hair I loved, $2225
Looking back at my credit card statements makes my stomach turn. I can't believe I spent that much money on my hair!

Chocolate Brown (ages 24-25)
After breaking up with my boyfriend of 4 years (yeah, he dumped me), I decided I needed a drastic change. I always wanted to see what it was like to be a brunette, so I went for it. I'm glad I stayed with the nice salon because my colorist was fantastic! She kept my hair healthy through all of the blond madness and the evolving shades of brown during this chocolate brown phase.
  • Color, every 6 weeks, $80=$694/year
  • Hair cut, every 6 weeks, $30=$260/year
  • Shampoo & Conditioner=$360/year
  • Styling products, $20/product, 3/year=$60
Total cost to be a beautiful brunette=$1374
As a brunette, my hair was a lot healthier than the blond stage, so I didn't require as many styling products.

After looking at my budget, I realized that I couldn't afford my current hair situation, so I started going to the Aveda school. I stopped coloring my hair, which was extremely rough. I also started washing my hair every other day, which turned out to be the best thing for my hair. My hair has never looked better and I have to spend a lot less time with my hair. Since I'm not coloring (damaging) my hair, I need a lot less hair cuts. My current hair costs are:
  • Hair Cut $15, 4 times per year=$60
  • Shampoo & Conditioner (down graded to drug store, but use coupons) $5/pairX4=$20
  • Aveda Brilliant Finishing Gloss (lasts a full year and a half)=$23
  • Suave Hairspray (I rarely use it, but I bought a can this year)=$1.50
Total hair cost=$104.50/year
The evolution of my hair has been extremely drastic, but it works for me. I really enjoy the Aveda school and I love Aveda products. The hair cuts I receive (long, round layers) are fantastic. I also switched to drug store brand shampoo and conditioner. I'm a big fan of SunSilk and L'Oreal NutriVive. The products work as well as the salon lines that I used to use. I still haven't been able to give up the Aveda styling product. Luckily, I only need one or two pumps after I wash my hair. My last bottle lasted for over 18 months. I also purchased a bottle of hair spray for up-dos and anything I attempt with a curling iron.

Saving Diva's No Bake Cookies

I'm a huge fan of cookies. I also have a slight addiction to chocolate. I've tweaked these cookies to make them a little "healthier," but still very delicious.

Lay wax paper on the counter.

2 cups sugar
1/2 cup cocoa
1/2 cup milk
1/2 cup butter

Add ingredients to a large pot and stir. Bring to a boil at medium temperature, allow to boil for 1 minute while continuing to stir.

Remove from the heat and add
1/2 cup Peanut Butter (start stirring)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
Optional: ground fax seed (just for more fiber)
Blend well
Add 3 cups oats (the actual recipe calls for quick oats, but I use organic stone rolled oats for more heft and fiber)

Use a large spoon to drop cookies on wax paper.

April Budget

I'm still tweaking my April budget, but I'm giving myself more wiggle room in categories that I didn't meet during my March budget.

Rent $670
Utilities $15
Internet $35
Laundry $10

Car Payment $225
Insurance $100 (rental & car)
Gas $125
Even though I'm going to start riding my bike to work next week, I will still drive to see my boyfriend on the weekends. With the gas prices constantly increasing, I think I will probably need at least $125/month through the summer to cover weekend trips.

Health Care $85
Parking $0 (I'm turning it my parking pass next Monday)
Gym $30

Food $200
Since this includes groceries and eating out, I think I'm still doing okay at $200. I tried to keep it at $150, but I started to feel depressed and grouchy. Plus, my cupboards are BARE!

Fun $100
Clothing $50
I need a new pair of jeans.
Beauty $0
I'm trying to beef up my car maintenance and emergency fund before I start pampering myself.

Travel $100
Retirement $711
Car Maintenance $95
Emergency Fund $200

Please feel free to post any feedback!

Extra Money coming in....

I thought I would share a little bit about the extra money that I make online--how I do it, how much I make, and what's coming.

Ebates--I will receive a deposit in my paypal account for $17.95 on May15th. $5 is from my sign-up bonus (they're running a special for a $10 sign-up bonus right now), $5 is from my boyfriend signing up for the site, and $7.95 are from purchases that I've made through the site. I click on the store links before I buy something (at Banana Republic, Target, JCrew, REI). I spent a total of $112.35 to earn this cash back. If you sign up with my link, I will also receive a $5 credit.

Fatwallet--I have currently received $49.91. I have $15.01 pending from my contacts purchase and filing my taxes with TurboTax. Fatwallet also has the option of paypal deposits.

PineCone--I have earned $100. I earn $5/survey which is automatically deposited into my paypal account a few days after I complete the survey.

MySurvey--I have earned $200 through MySurvey. It takes a while to receive the paper checks in the mail. Also, you have to wait until you accumulate 1,000 points (=$10) in order to redeem your points.

PayPerPost--I have earned $540.15 through PPP, with another $158.42 pending. The opportunites are becoming harder to get, but it's still a nice way to make a few dollars with your blog.

I've tried other survey sites, but I just didn't have the patience to follow through. I'm currently trying out MyPoints, but I haven't earned enough points to redeem for any gift cards. I also used CashDuck and earned a small duck bank, but I hardly use the site any more (I only have 15 points).

New glasses & shoes

Today I decided to wear my new glasses and a pair of ballet flats I received as a Christmas gift for the first time today. I find both items adorable, so I'm feeling pretty special.

Is it bad that things can make me feel special? Probably. I'm not going to let that fact take any wind out of my sails.
I spent about $100 for lens upgrades on my new frames (anti-glare coating & lighter/thinner lenses). I am SO glad I did. Even though my prescription didn't change, I'm experiencing a lot less eye strain than with my old glasses or contacts. Since I don't want to spend $200 every year on a new pair of glasses, I'm carrying around a microfiber cloth to clean my glasses. I feel a little ridiculous pulling it out of my bag....but it is cute (and matches my glasses) and very practical. I plan on trying to keep these glasses for at least 5 years (I had my last pair for 6).
I love the Coach ballet flats. They're super comfortable and really cute. I also like that my pair doesn't match perfectly (the pattern is shifted from one shoe to the other). I'm not sure if all of the pairs have that feature or just this pair. I find the shoes different and amusing. However, they're not the most practical shoes to wear when there is snow on the ground.

Monday, Monday...

I'm happy to have Monday done! I plan on going home and cleaning my apartment because I didn't stick to my cleaning schedule last week. I will also work on creating my budget for April (look forward to it).

I also received a $10 check in the mail from MySurvey. I thought I would add a poll for my readers...what do you guys think I should do?

New Glasses

This morning I picked up my new glasses. They're really cute, but I will admit that I went a little overboard and picked out Michael Kors frames. My insurance covered quite a bit. I opted for the Michael Kors frames with a few different lens upgrades. The total came to $200. I knew that I was going to purchase glasses this year, so I have money in my FSA to cover them.

Since I splurged on my glasses, I searched for a discount on contacts. Using fatwallet's cash back program, a manufacturer rebate, price matching, and a discount code, my saved about $80 on my annual contact supply.

I need to be careful about my health care spending because I only have enough to cover my prescriptions and my annual check-ups left in my FSA. I know I sound like an ad for FSA accounts, but mine is fantastic! I usually spend the majority of my FSA in the beginning of the year (last year dental bills wiped it out in January), so it's nice that I'm getting and interest free loan from myself.

Happy Easter!

I just got home! I'm very happy to be back, but I don't want to go to work tomorrow! I still need a few days off. Time at my parents' house is not restful.

I had a nice time with my family. However, one of my sisters is extremely annoyed at my spending habits (or she considers lack of spending). She lectured me about buying a house (I don't have a down payment), buying a new car (I don't have the money), and buying new furniture. I feel like I'm constantly defending my lifestyle.

Since she's still in graduate school (and has a new car & furniture), she thinks that I make SO much money (about $40k/year). After dinner, my family was sitting around the table and money came up (I didn't bring it up). My sister starts lecturing me about how I need to buy all of these things. I just said I didn't really need them. She told me that I've never had to struggle for money to pay bills. She's trying to pay down a few thousand dollars in credit card debt, so I can understand her frustration. I unfortunately made an unwise decision to point out that I lived with roommates in a crappy apartment until this summer while she has lived alone (paying close to double my rent). I should have kept my mouth shut, but I couldn't. My parents pay for her car, car insurance, gas, cell phone, health insurance, and tuition (didn't bring that up). She got extremely defensive and started making excuses about why she had to live alone. I apologized about 10 minutes later (when it was just the two of us, saying that it wasn't my business and I shouldn't have said anything), but she wasn't hearing it. Instances like this make me realize that I need to keep my finances and plans to myself.

After my sister and her fiance left, my dad and my grandmother started talking about their retirement portfolios. Lucky for my sisters and myself, my parents will be very well set for retirement in a few years. I also appreciated the advice that my parents had to offer. My grandmother has a financial planner deal with her money, but my parents manage most of their own investments (they do have some one that deals with non-retirement stuff). Since I'm not a very savvy investor, I'll listen to any advice given (and research it later).

Let it snow...

I'm snowed in. My drive home (1.5 miles) took over 45 minutes because the roads are horrible and traffic was backed up. I decided that I'm just going to stay in until the roads are plowed, which could be a few days.

I signed up for Blockbuster Online on Wednesday and I received my first DVDs today. I also made no-bake cookies (awesome). I'm throwing a little snowed-in party for myself. I'm also fully stocked with magazines!

I think I might go to my parents' house for Easter. I'm not really excited about spending the money on gas, but I will go if I can find some one to car pool with.

I also received my first book from a publisher to review on my blog. Since I love to read, I am pretty excited. I'm almost finished with the book, so look for the review this weekend.

Rock Climbing & Noodles

I had a wonderful noodle bowl for lunch that I bought at the grocery store last night. For $1.99, I had a quick lunch that I just threw into my bad this morning on the way to work. I spent more time getting ready than usual because my face might appear on TV.

I think I'm going to go rock climbing with a friend tonight. I'm a little tired, but I think it will be fun. We're going to go during the discounted climb time. Plus, I own all of my own gear, so I don't have to rent anything.

Update--Went climbing and had a blast!

A little extra cash...

I have a little extra money coming my way from a side project. I was an extra in a commercial. I'm not sure how much I'm getting paid, when the money is coming, or how I'm getting paid. I thought I was just around to bring up a few videos that I had made. Any money that I make will be added to my EF, which is in desperate need of a boost!

Frugal Update

I'm a huge fan of the Scrubbing Bubbles Automatic Shower Cleaner. Now, I only clean my tub and shower once a month, and it's super fast. However, the refills cost $3.50. I had been using coupons to keep the cost down to about $2/refill.

Last night, I realized that my shower cleaner bottle was empty, and I didn't have any refills around. Rather than go to the grocery store (yes, I'm lazy), I remembered Lazy Man's post about saving on automatic shower refills. I used a pair of pliers (more advice from Lazy Man) to remove the top. I used a cheap cleaner and diluted it with water. The automatic shower cleaner worked perfectly! :) For about $.25 I will have a clean shower for another month.

On another cleaning note, my cleaning schedule has been fantastic! I printed out a google calendar with all of my daily chores mapped out. Every day that I complete my chore, I cross it off the calendar. If I have a busy day or had to work at my second job, I will finish the chore the next day. My apartment has never been cleaner!

Updating my side bars....

I just added $200 to my emergency fund--bringing the total to $436.56. I also opened a travel fund and added $100 for my weekend trip planned for June. I also added $70 to my car maintenance fund, bringing the total to $71.53.

My down payment fund got a boost today from my second job pay check ($191.89). The grand total of my down payment fund is $2,208.67, which is 7.36% of my $30,000 goal. During March, I've added $354.74 to my down payment account. I need to add an additional $45.26 to meet my $400 March goal.

Rainy Miserable Day...

It is REALLY miserable outside today! YUCK! I'm happy that I didn't have to ride my bike in this weather.

I'm debating when to turn in my parking pass and start riding my bike to work again. I would save $60/month on parking. Also, I would save money on gas (not exactly sure how much). As I watch the gas prices go up and up, I think how much longer can I afford to even drive my car?

Yesterday I spent $9 on lunch! WHOA! Krystal is probably going to kick me out of her lunch challenge soon because I've been so bad! I should be embarrassed to post my updates on her blog! However, today I packed my lunch and a snack!

Yes, I have a case of the Mondays. The weekend was awesome, so work is seeming ultra boring today. Also, I went out to lunch....I've been the worst participant in Krystal's lunch challenge...I really need to go to the grocery store!

What I'm saving for....

Every once in a while I have to remind myself what I'm saving for....to provide motivation....to provide focus....and to reevaluate what I want and what I need...

I would still like a one bathroom condo. I don't need anything fancy in the bathroom...

However, I would like an awesome closet. I would love something that would allow me to be extremely organized.

Since I want a dog, I wonder if a condo would work...maybe a small house...

Boyfriend & Dog are gone....

I had an awesome weekend--dog sitting, boyfriend visiting, and running a 5k.

My sister picked up her dog this morning :( I was sad to see the dog leave, but I know the dog was very happy to go back to my sister's place.

My boyfriend and I had an awesome weekend. We had a fun time with the dog. I think the dog really got to my boyfriend. I noticed him petting the dog this morning at 7 a.m. It was really cute. The dog was half on the bed (front paws only) and snuggling with my boyfriend. SO CUTE! I wish my camera battery wasn't dead (still waiting for a replacement from Casio).

My boyfriend and I also ran a 5k race together this weekend. We had fun, but didn't run very well....Oh well!

Scared of a mortgage?

I am currently saving for a down payment on a home (house, condo, I don't know). I'm shooting for 20% down, plus enough for closing costs. However, I am frightened of having a Mortgage. I've only been alive for 26 years, so I can't imagine having a 30 year mortgage....Would it ever end?! With the current state of the mortgage/banking industry, I also wonder whether or not I could even get a mortgage. I have a clean credit history, but I don't actually know my credit score (too cheap to pay for it). I wonder how large of a mortgage I could get approved for....I'm tempted to get a free Mortgage quote just to know where I stand (the link is good for personal and business mortgages). Has any one else gotten a mortgage quote just to see how much money a bank would loan them?

Keeping the ball rolling!

I just added another $15 to my down payment fund. I had $15 in my paypal account from a PPP referral. This is my first PPP referral, and I'm really excited! Thanks for signing up through my blog. If any one else is interested in signing up for PPP, please consider following a link from my page.

This brings my down payment savings account to $2,031.78! I have saved a total of $162.85 during the month of March. I need to save $237.15 to reach my March goal of adding $400 to my down payment account. I am now at 6.77% of my $30,000 goal!

I also received another $10 check from MySurvey. I will use this check to help pay my car insurance this month.

CitiBank is CRAZY....

....if they think that i will pay $14.95 to pay my bill over the phone!

Back story: I tried to switch my bank information on their website, but I didn't know my secret password (yeah, not my password but my other password). I tried a few different things, but I froze myself out of the bill pay for 24 hours. The website says you can mail in the payment or pay over the phone. I don't need to pay for a while (2 weeks), but I don't like to keep things on cards that I use infrequently.

I called CitiBank to pay my $14 balance, and the CSR tells me ab out the $14.95 charge for paying over the phone. I said that was more than my balance and I will just wait until I regain web access. He offered to waive the charge, but I didn't actually trust him to do that (is that horrible?) and didn't want to deal with getting the charge waived later on. Who pays over the phone and pays $15?!

Boyfriend and Dog

My boyfriend is visiting this weekend, and I'm super excited. I gave him his birthday gifts last night and he loved them. He even sharpened one of my knives last night!

I also have the dog (until tonight). I'm not really sure how much my boyfriend likes having the dog around (especially when she jumped into bed with us and started licking him). I have to admit that I love having her around....but I would chose my boyfriend over a dog....I think....

Maybe a doodle...

What if I had a golden doodle?

They're hypoallergenic and super cute!

Sorry! Still in dog mode!

Dog Sitting

My sister is out of town, so I'm watching her dog. I'm in love! I want a dog so much! I know that my budget doesn't really have any wiggle room for pet care, so I'll have to wait until I get a bigger emergency fund.

My sister dropped the dog off last night after dinner. I could tell she was down after my sister left, so we went for a walk. We swung by a friend's apartment and she joined us for about 2 hours. By the time I arrived home, I was exhausted, but the dog was still waiting for my sister to come back and pick her up.

The dog slept on the floor right next to my bed. She was a little antsy for breakfast and woke me up 30 minutes before my alarm. The extra 30 minutes gave us time to go for a walk after my shower. I feel guilty leaving her at home when I left for work. Luckily, I live extremely close to work, so I'll swing by during lunch to say hello.

Dog sitting is a lot better than the cat incident because I love dogs, I'm not allergic to dogs, it's only for 3 days, and the dog is at my apartment (not 30 minutes away).

I haven't shared the asset allocation of my retirement funds because I was a little embarrassed. When I started my job, I signed up for the retirement plan because I thought I should. However, when it came to decide what to invest in, I randomly chose names (no research) that I liked. My 401(k) stayed in this ridiculous disorder until a few days ago when I said enough was enough and I decided to reallocate my funds.

Currently, my 401(k) has 66% in the Fidelity Freedom 2045 fund and 34% in the Fidelity Freedom 2050 fund. My Roth IRA is still invested in the Fidelity Capital Appreciation fund (FDCAX). I kept putting off the reallocation because I was unsure about what funds to invest in. I'm not looking for amazing returns, so I'm content with the hands-off approach with the targeted funds. We'll see how this new approach works for right now.

Another small addition...

I added another $15 to my down payment account (from PPP). As of March 1st, I have added $147.85 to my down payment account. I set a high goal for March of depositing $400 in my down payment account. I need to add an additional $252.15 to my down payment account in order to reach my monthly goal.

I have $2,016.78 in my down payment account, which is 6.67% of my $30,000 goal.

Simplify & Reduce

I receive a lot of catalogs! Most of the catalogs are from companies that I used to order from in my shopping days. Now, I hardly glance at the catalogs before I toss them into the recycling bin. I've just found Catalog Choice, which is an easy and painless way to remove your name from a catalog mailing list. I'm in love! I'm going to try to unsubscribe myself from any catalogs and magazines (I'll have to call the companies for the magazines) that I don't read. I will keep one catalog-Sephora-around...just because I love Sephora!

Fabulous Hair Cut!

I got my hair cut yesterday after work. I have to say that it looks fabulous! I'm so happy that I scheduled a little me time. I'm thinking about breaking my budget and scheduling a service (even though I didn't budget for it) because I've been feeling a little overwhelmed. I have been having a hard time relaxing and focusing (reading a magazine is difficult). It might be the extra hours that I've been putting in at my second job....

Total spent on hair cut: $16

Rolling in random cash...

The title is a bit of an over statement, but I'm still feeling pumped about my extra income streams this month. I just hit $2k in my down payment account! I just deposited $5 into my down payment account from participating in a PineCone survey. The grand total in my down payment account is now $2,001.78, which is 6.67% of my $30,000 goal!

I also will add $20 to my emergency fund account from MySurvey. I'm also waiting on an additional $20 from MySurvey which I will decide what to do with when I receive the checks.

I will be receiving a check from eBates (my first) for $15.55. $5 is from my sign-up bonus, $5 is a tell-a-friend credit, and $5.55 is from cash back on purchases (a few Christmas gifts & splurges for myself). Right now, eBates is giving $10 for sign-up (and I will get a $5 credit too).

I also worked over 10 hours at my second job during this past pay period. I will look forward to getting that pay check deposited into my down payment account!

Birthday Bonanza!

Both my dad and boyfriend's birthdays are in March. I purchased my boyfriend's gifts--whet stone and potato masher (yeah, he's a bizarre one)--using a combination of gift certificates and the $17 from my March gift budget.

I still have $23 in my gift budget to get a gift for my dad. Unfortunately, my dad can't think of anything that he would like for his birthday. My mother is also not providing any hints because she also hasn't purchased anything. Does any one have any frugal gift advice?

Serious Spending!

I cut my budget a little too close in February, so I have went a little crazy with spending in March. Here's where I stand:

Food $48.67 left out of my $150 budget...I guess I'm going to be eating a lot of Ramen and PB&J sandwiches!

Fun/Misc over spent by $18.66. My biggest expense was the suits from Target ($65.87). I plan on making up the difference with my Discover rewards (added $20 cash to my bill). I'm going to keep $1.34 in my fun account.

Gas $51.65 left in from my $125 budget. My tank is full, but I'm really going to have to cut down on my driving to keep under budget.

Inching towwards $2k

The results have been tabulated. My emergency fund won, 8.5 to 5.5, and I will deposit the additional cash this month ($20). I will add $220 to my emergency fund this month. Thank you for all of my readers that voted.

I added an additional $5 to my down payment fund. This small little bundle of cash came from a PPP opportunity. This brings the grand total of my down payment fund to $1,993.15, which is 6.64% of my $30,000 goal. I'm so close to the $2k mark...I can't wait!

I also had a little spending slip-up at Target. I bought two new suits. Total damage=$63.56. I didn't build clothes into my March budget, so I'm scrambling to cut back in other areas. I will use some of my fun/misc money and some of the money set aside for gifts (I guess the bikinis are a gift to me).

Lunch Challenge

I'm participating in Krystal's lunch challenge--no money spent on food for snacks or lunch February 19th through the end of March. I must confess that I slipped up on Tuesday. I packed my lunch, but I chose to go to the cafeteria and eat a dessert (bad for my diet and for the lunch challenge). I spent about $3 at the cafeteria (I also got a pop. I'm so bad).

I'm still trying to stick to the challenge. I packed my lunch and I stocked my desk with snack foods. I'm currently sipping a Sparkling Clementine Izze (yum) and snacking on a few almonds.

After my big shopping trip on Friday, I taped the receipt to my fridge. I've been crossing out the items that I finish. So far, it's working really well. I ate all of my fresh strawberries before they went bad, finished off the bananas, made mashed potatoes (haven't eaten them yet), and reminded myself that I do have food still available. I think I will start keeping all of my food receipts on my fridge. It's a great reminder of what type of food that I have and a reminder to use something before it goes bad.

I'm drinking this Izze and thinking, "Wow! This is really good!" However, at $5 for a pack of four, the Izze will not become a staple in my food budget. I may just treat myself from time to time. I have to admit that it's a much healthier option than a Coke (also delicious, but not in my food budget).

Extra Money

I currently have two $10 checks from MySurvey sitting on my coffee table. I usually add any extra money to my down payment account. However, my down payment account is nearing $2,000 and my emergency fund is sitting at $200. I'm considering adding this random income to my emergency fund. I'm trying to build my emergency fund, so I think this would be productive. However, I have a bad habit of over spending and raiding my EF to make up the difference.

What should I do? Update: Down Payment Fund 5.5 Emergency Fund 8.5

A Shot in the Arm!

I was feeling a little down yesterday about making small deposits into my down payment account. Today, my second job deposited $114.22 into my down payment account. This brings the grand total to $1,988.15, which is 6.63% of my $30,000 goal. I'm working a lot (more than I'm used to) at my second job this month. It's nice to see that the extra hours spent working are helping me reach my savings goals.

In order to reach my March goal of adding $400 to my down payment account, I will need to save an additional $280.78 this month. I think I will be able to meet this goal with just my income from my part time job.

I also need to build up my emergency fund. I'm contemplating putting some of my income from my second job into my emergency fund. However, I'm worried that I will raid my emergency fund when I want to take a vacation or when I need something silly. I still don't totally trust myself with money. I have a lot of bad habits when it comes to spending, and I worry that I'll fall back into the bad habits if I give myself a cushion.

Trying to build my savings...

I added five dollars to my down payment account through Paypal. The money is from a PPP opp that I did during February. I have a grand total of $1873.93 in my down payment account, which is 6.25% of my $30,000 goal.

Occasionally I get frustrated with how slowly I have been accumulating money. However, I have to remember that I started saving for a down payment less than 11 months ago and I've saved over $1800! The bigger surprise is that I've done it with random money from surveys, eBay, and my second job. I have added less than $100 from my primary pay check. When I think of what I've accomplished in a short period of time, I'm really proud of myself because I used to waste the $5 here and there on silly things that would be consumed or lost within a few days or weeks.

Check out Fabulously Broke's Closet Sale...

Fabulously Broke is cleaning out her closet and selling a lot of items on a new blog. I was once in her position with a lot of clothes still with the tags on them. I have to admit that I just donated them to the Salvation Army. Fabulously Broke is trying to pay down her debt and cut down on clutter.

Optimizing my budget

Recently I've become obsessed with decreasing categories in my budget. I want to optimize fun, travel, and savings. My biggest budget categories (in order) are retirement, rent, car, and food. The first three are something that I'm can't really change right now (working on it), but I can decrease my food budget. I've already decreased my food budget from $300 when I started this blog to $150 (starting in February). I'm not sure how much more I can decrease my budget without making myself miserable.

Another category that I'm going to work on decreasing is gas. With a long distance relationship, I don't know how much I can bring it down; but I'm going to try to get it back under $100. I also would like to take the parking expenses($60/month) out of the equation. Until the snow melts, I will be unable to ride my bike to work. As soon as the snow melts, I'll get rid of my parking permit and ride my bike to work--saving on both gas and parking.

I also hate paying $35/month for internet. I'm going to look into cheaper options. AT&T is now advertising that you don't need a phone line for their internet service, so I'm going to look into that option. I might get rid of my internet service like I did last summer, but that was extremely rough (no cable & no internet...ohmy!).

Making the most of my food budget

I have a bad habit of letting food sit and expire. If I don't eat food within 3 days of bringing it into my apartment, it will probably sit for a few months until I realize it is past its expiration date and throw it away. In order to combat the "I forgot I had that" disease, I am attaching my receipt from Whole Foods to my refrigerator door. When I finish something, I cross it off the receipt. If I only eat part of the item, I put a tally next to the item so I can see how many times I wanted to eat it. I will reevaluate my grocery shopping at the end of the month; and I will keep you posted about what food I eat right away (chocolate) and what foods go bad (usually bread).

2 frozen pizzas @ $3.99 each
Asparagus (gone-2 meals) @$2.76
2 clementines $1.84
red potatoes $1.97
Kashi frozen waffles $2.99
Grape Tomatoes $2.49
Butter $4.39
Green Pepper $1
Sweet Onion $1.21
Banana (2 gone) $2.47
Fresh Strawberries (gone) $2.99
2 seedless cucumbers @$.99 each
Dark chocolate bar $2.69
Navel Oranges $2.35
Yogurt (1 gone) @$.99 each*6
Hummus $2.39
Baby Carrots $2.49
Izze (1 gone) $4.50
Half Gallon Milk $2.99
Milk chocolate bar (gone) $.67
Chocolate pudding (2 servings) $2.99
Frozen Strawberries $1.69
Romaine Hearts $2.50
Milk Chocolate Bar (yes, another one and it's half gone) $1.99

Including a $.30 bag refund for bringing my own bags, a $1 coupon, and a $10 off coupon; the total came to $56.37. Therefore, I have $93.63 left in my food budget for March.

March is Beauty Month

I've been starting to feel a little dowdy recently. I blame it on the dry air, cold weather, and wool sweaters. I decided that I need to give myself a beauty over haul this month. Unfortunately, my budget doesn't have a lot of breathing room, so I was only able to budget $15. I've made a game plan for this month. I am also including links to the products that I use because some one always asks. If any one has any frugal beauty tips, please let me know.

Hair--I plan on spending the $15 budget at the Aveda training salon where I usually get my hair cut. My last hair cut was fabulous, so I'm going to try to get the same student to cut my hair this month. I stopped coloring my hair about 2 years ago and it was the best thing I've ever done. I did have totally change my make-up; but I save so much money on color ($200 every 8 weeks for high lights and $50 every 4 weeks for a root touch-up) it's totally worth it. Also, my hair has never been healthier and I'm using drug store shampoo & conditioner!

Skin care--Since I don't have enough money in my beauty budget to get a facial (and haven't had a facial since I started budgeting), I need to make due with the products I have. Today I masked(Paula's Choice Skin Balancing Carbon Mask, $12.95) and exfoliated(Biore Pore Unclogging Scrub, $5) my face. My skin is lacking its regular radiance, so I'm going to see what I can do.

Body--I plan on exfoliating my entire body using Bath & Body Works I'm in a mood for a scrub (a gift from my sister, $20) and hydrating with Soap & Glory Body Butter ($14.99 from Target) or Carita Body Oil (a gift, $63). I also have started feeling pale (but tanning beds are so bad for your skin), so I've started using a self-tanner for my face (Jergens Natural Glow, about $7) and body (Jergens Natural Glow Daily Moisturizer, $6).

Diet--I went shopping at Whole Foods and spent $56 (including a $10 off coupon) on a lot of produce and organic products. I plan on trying to eat healthy and stay hydrated to improve the appearance of my skin. I'm also hoping the increase in fruit and vegetables in my diet will help me drop a few more pounds.

Nails--I've given myself a manicure (OPI passion, $8) and a pedicure using products that I had around my apartment. Solar oil ($8.75 for .5 oz) and a fine emery board is the key to awesome nails. I also exfoliated my feet in the shower, but I could really use a nice foot file.
