My Plan to get rid of cockroaches
Since I moved into my condo, I have found 3 cockroaches. One during the first week and two in the past few days. I've read a lot of different do it yourself "rid your house of cockroaches" articles.
My plan of attack has a lot of different parts, but I can't sleep when I'm thinking that there are cockroaches in my condo.
Outside:
I plan on filling holes around the condo with caulk to keep the cockroaches and any other bugs from finding their way inside.
I am going to sprinkle Diatomaceous Earth around the perimeter of my condo. I've read that it's an easy way to kill pests with exoskeletons. The rough edges damage the exoskeleton and the pests die from dehydration.
Inside
I plan on using Borax all over! I plan on sprinkling it on my carpets, leaving it for a few days, and then vacuuming it up. I plan on sprinkling it under my bathroom and kitchen sinks.
I am going to use bay leaves in my cabinets with my plates and food. I read that cockroaches don't like bay leaves. I will try to find a spice shop, so I can buy them in bulk (much cheaper than buying them in the grocery store).
I'm also planning on purchasing a gel to dot in the cracks of my cabinets and along my floors.
I will buy a few roach motels under my bathroom and kitchen sinks.
I might work on creating a few Vegas roach traps.

Cockroaches LOVE cardboard. Throw away all the cardboard, down to the boxes that hold your ziploc bags! My friend had a huge roach problem, and the exterminator had her get rid of every piece of cardboard in her apartment.
Oh man! I HATE bugs! Good luck!
Try peppermint oil in water. Keep it in a spray bottle and spray around every few days. We had to do it for mice, but I think roaches hate it too.
Yikes! I really hope they aren't living in your drywall. It gives me the chills just thinking about it.
The thing that worked for me was to leave Texas and move to a place with a real winter. Worked like a charm! :)
OMG, they are so gross. I have managed to control them inside, but I think my neighbors may live in squalor or something, because I have seen SWARMS of them near their condo. I think they're bad too b/c of the proximity to the creek.
Anon, I'll work on the cardboard! I'm trying to minimize clutter (in general), so cardboard would be along that same path.
EbonyRenee, I hate bugs too! I hoping the diatomateous earth keeps out a lot of different types of bugs.
SavingCentsintheCity, I hadn't heard about peppermint oil, but I'll have to look into it. Right now, I'm using bay leaves in areas that I don't want to use chemicals.
DogAteMyFinances, UGH! I hope not! Considering I've seen three since I moved in (and I keep bizarre hours), I don't think I have a total infestation.
TheExecutioner, I just left winter! I don't want to go back to it!
Jane, How do you minimize them in your place? One is enough to send me over the edge!
