What to wear? Part II
Thanks for all of the great feedback from my post yesterday. I have the best readers EVER! I have so much to think about.
Good News
- I totally forgot about a pair of black kitten heels that I own, so I don't need to purchase any new shoes!
- A lot of commenters pointed out that I could just buy individual pieces from a store. I have a skirt that could possibly match a blazer (it's from a suit set from the Limited).
- Even though some commenters don't like my button down shirts (Little Miss Moneybags used the term masculine), I still plan on wearing a few of them with my gray wool pants (on the days I don't have to present) at the conference.
- I do have a few items that would look nice under a suit (that aren't button down shirts).
- Dog made an excellent point about a skirt suit set. Since I live in Texas, a black suit (boring, but versatile) will be a year round option. However, I need to acquire a blazer.
- I don't have any dresses that would look appropriate under a blazer.

I just want to point out that it's not button down shirts in general that I find masculine, but the combination of button down shirt + jacket. I regularly wear button downs myself, but never with a jacket. Alone or with a sweater is perfect for the conference. Good luck! :)
Your suit doesn't have to be black, unless you're going to court or a funeral, and even then women don't have to wear black.
I'd try to get a gray or a pattern or even a brown. Black is just so severe. Go check out SYMS, I bet this will be a $100 piece of cake.
Do you have a Burlington Coat Factory nearby? They have really reasonable prices and cute items. Instead of just a plain black suit, look for one with subtle stripes to add a little to it.
Just thought of another option.
You could buy a more exciting blazer, like a tweedy plaid one or something like that. I'm thinking of a black and white large houndstooth patterned tweed one I have that would go great with the stuff you already have. A piece like that can take you a lot of places.
Remember people will see you chest up, so you need some interest or color or jewelry or something.
If you can find a jacket like that at a cheaper place, you won't even have to go to the mall for a boring old suit jacket.
I totally agree that black is harsh if you aren't a banker. I usually go for charcoal if I need a basic suit, and something in the espresso/brown family if I want to look my personal best (better for pale skin/light hair).
